2007 NFL Season Game #6 Monday October 8, 2007 FREE

Philadelphia Eagles holder Sav Rocca (8) places the ball as kicker David Akers, left, kicks a 25-yard field goal during the third quarter of a NFL football game against the New York Jets. It was his third sucessful field goal on the game, which extended the Eagles lead to 16-6. The Jets kicker in Mike Nugent made the Jets only points on the game with three field goals. Akers did miss two 41-yarders and continue to struggle at Giants Stadium. He finished the game making 3 of 5 field goals.

Philadelphia Eagles'
Stat Of The Week

The Philadelphia Eagles improved to 2-3 after a 0-2 start. They're now 9-0 under head coach Andy Reid in their first game following the bye week and 53-21 in all their games under Reid after the bye. They are also 8-0 all-time against the New York Jets. Donovan McNabb's 75-yard TD pass to Kevin Curtis was the 3rd longest of his career. It was also the longest TD pass against the Jets since Kerry Collins' 80-yarder to Amani Toomer for the Giants in 1999. Leon Washington's 51-yard kick return to set up the Jets' 2nd FG was the longest against the Eagles since Dante Hall's 96-yarder for a TD in a 37-31 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 2, 2005. The two teams combined for 9 field goals, two short of the NFL record of 11, which happened 4 times - most recently with the redskins and Giants in 1976. Joselio Hanson's 4th-quarter sack was the second of his career and the first since 2004, when as a 49er he sacked Drew Bledsoe of the Bills. Reno Mahe's 32-yard punt return was his 2nd longest of his career and Eagles' longest since Mahe's 44-yarder against the Seahawks in 2005.

Eagles Redzone Defense Holds Jets
To Just 3 FG's In 16-9 Birds Win.

Yes, the Eagles won, but barely with the defense. At times the offense did move the ball pretty good between the 20’s again, but like earlier in most of the Eagles games, the offense always seems to self-destruct in the red zone. Five times, the Eagles were within striking distance. All the Philadelphia offense could muster was three lousy FG’s. Nine total points out of a possible 35. ZERO TOUCHDOWNS! The Eagles did score the game’s only TD and that came early in the first quarter thanks to some poor/missed tackling on the Jets secondary. After New York struck early with a Mike Nugent 30-yd FG, McNabb struck right back as he connected on a slant pattern to Kevin Curtis. McNabb completed the 3rd-and-8 pass to Curtis and he broke through the tackling attempt of both Jet safeties, Kerry Rhodes and Eric Smith. He ended up scoring a TD on this 75-yd play giving the Eagles a 7-3 lead, which they would not relinquish.

Thanks to another Eagles stingy defensive effort, the New York Jets did not score a single TD and settled for just 3 FG’s. This was the second time this season that The Eagles defense held the opponent touchdown-less. The only real offense the Jets could muster came via the ground game. The newly acquired RB Thomas Jones broke through the Eagles defensive front time after time, finishing the game with 130 rushing yards on 24 carries. Jones looked like a Tiki Barber clone, changing direction on most of his runs making the linebackers looking bad. But to the Eagles credit, the defense always found a way to stop the Jets from scoring the big seven. They did force Jets QB Chad Pennington into many forced incompletions and 1 INT. Pennington only completed 11-of-21 passes for 128 yards and no TD’s. He was also sacked three times. The Jets managed just 267 total yards compared to the Eagles 413 total yards that the Eagles produced. McNabb had OK numbers, completing almost 63% of his passes (22-35) for 278 passing yards. Of course, 75 of those yards came one play to Kevin Curtis. Curtis continues to put up big numbers with 5 receptions for 121 yards. Reggie Brown had pretty good numbers too, catching 6 passes for 89 yards. His biggest catch came in the closing minutes of the game, when the Eagles were attempting to kill off the clock. The Eagles were in a 3rd-and-7 situation at their own 7-yard line. McNabb went back to pass and was tripped by his own lineman, but somehow managed to get himself up and completed a pass to Brown along the sidelines. Somehow, Brown juked out Darelle Revis and gained 13 yards for a first down out to the 20-yard line.

The Eagles continued the clock ticking to zero with a few nice runs by Brian Westbrook. He gained 22 yards and then 21 yards, respectively before McNabb only had to kneel down for the final 45 seconds. In the realm of things in this 16-game season, it was still a good win. The defense played well. Special teams looked good, except for the continuing suffering of David Akers field goal attempts in the New Jersey swamplands. The Eagles offense has got to get itself on track and score more touchdowns, instead of settling for field goals. McNabb’s biggest problem besides his accuracy is the amount of time he has in the pocket. He seems to always be running for his life on every other play. Westbrook has to become a bigger part of this offense when it matters most (red zone plays). He had a another big game with big numbers, rushing 20 times for 120 yards and added another 36 receiving yards, yet once inside the 20-yd line, Andy Reid does not seem to utilize his talents. The reeling Chicago Bears come to town next week. They are now 2-4 and also in last place (NFC North). The Bears defense is usually even more aggressive than the NY Giants, who sacked Donovan McNabb 12 times a few weeks ago. Andy better find a better way to protect his QB and have a decent blocking scheme in place for the game on Sunday. Otherwise, McNabb will have another long afternoon. Lastly, tell Sav Rocca to punt the ball out-of-bounds and always away from Devin Hester.
