Dallas Is In Disarray After 'Boys
Were Whipped Into Submission.
The Philadelphia Eagles started the game with a surprise onside kick which
which was recovered by the Eagles' Dameane Douglas. Then the Eagles offense led
by Donavan McNabb and Duce Staley led the Eagles straight down the field for an
early touchdown which gave the Birds a 7-0 lead. Soon afterwards, the Eagles D
took over the game and crushed any life the Cowboys had left. Troy Aikman was
sacked 4 times, hit a number of times and finally was knocked silly by both
James Darling and hugh Douglas on a the 4th bone-jarring sack in the first half.
This was only the beginning. Before Aikman was sent to the hospital, the much
touted Eagles' linebacker Jeremiah Trotter intercepted the ball and ran it back
for the Eagles third TD. At halftime, the Birds lead 24-6, same as last years'
opener against Arizona which Jake Plummer led a late charge and a Cards victory,
25-24.
The Eagles started the second half with a 14 play - 61 yard field goal drive
which also took 8 minutes and 30 seconds off the clock. That put the finishing
touches on a game which had the Boys favored by 6 points. What went wrong? NO!
What went right? The Eagles offensive line completely manhandled the Dallas
defensive line and linebackers and led to 306 yards on the ground alone. Donavan,
though he was intercepted twice was still better than average and finsihed 16 of 28
for 130 yards and 1 TD pass and only 1 sack. The Eagles defensive scheme completely
shut down the Cowboys' running game and held Emmitt Smith to only 29 yards. Not only
that, they held Dallas to only 167 total yards all day on the NFL's hottest day ever
for a football game. It was 109° at game time with a temperature of 180°
on the turf itself. The Cowboys were supposed to be ready for the heat and humidity, but
it was the Eagles and their "Pickle Juice" that proved to be the difference in this
completely lopsided opening day victory. Joey Galloway is out for the year and now you
must ask, will Aikman retire? I know one thing, it appears that the Dallas Cowboys'
season just ended and the Eagles season just beginning. Better luck next year!!!
