The Giants dominated ball control with a 39 to 21 minute advantage. But the
Giants' passing was the big difference as the G-Men converted 3rd down after 3rd
through the air. New York finished the day 7-14 on 3rd down conversions. Kerry
Collins connected on pass after pass while the Giants defense held the Eagles to
just 42 yards and only 2 first downs in the first half. Though the Giants led only
6-3 with less than two minutes in the half, they totally dominated the Birds on
both lines - offensively and defensively. The Eagles went 3 and out 4 times out of
5 in the first half alone. The Giants outgained the Birds 120-8 alone in the first
quarter, but only lead 3-0. Donavan McNabb connected on a 31 yard pass to Chad
Lewis who made a great one-handed catch down to the Giants 4 yard line with 9 minutes
left in the half. The Eagles eventually settled for only a field goal and
a 3-3 tie. New York went right down the field again and scored again, but led only
6-3. But in the last minute of the half, the Giants scored 2 touchdowns, led 20-3
and basically put the Eagles to rest.
The Eagles started the second half with a drive which led to a field goal
and they cut the lead to 20-6. The Giants answered with a 10 play drive for
67 yards and took off another 5 minutes off the clock. Donavan took the Birds
down the field again and finally gave the Birds their first touchdown on the
day with another spectacular run as he ran the QB draw for 15 yards and Philly
cut the lead to 27-12 after the extra point was blocked. The Giants won going
away 33-18. They now own a 2-0 record and sole possesion of first place in the NFC East.
Eagles McNabb finished the day 19-33 for 214 yards and 1 TD. More importantly,
Duce Staley had only 7 carries for 11 yards rushing. McNabb outrushed Duce with
45 yards on his own. But it was the Giants 387 yards to 237 yards that was the
big story of this one. The Eagles travel to Green Bay next week where the Packers
are now 0-2.
