Don't say I told ya so. The Philadelphia Eagles proved one of a few things
to the NFL on Sunday after whipping the Seattle Seahawks, 27-3. First,
that are a legitimate team of Super Bowl caliber. Secondly, their defense
is one in the company of the Baltimore Ravens. I would not want the job of
opposing quarterback against this defense. Sure, they blitz a lot. But
they also get great penetration and have excellent pursuit and not to mention
perhaps the NFL's best secondary by far. This defense comes at you like
those old Buddy Ryan's teams. They come at you from every angle and the put
a hurting on you. Just ask Kurt Warner of the Rams. Two weeks ago, the Eagles
defense sacked him 5 times and hit him another 13 times during the game. He barely
had time to react. Did I mention they also held Marshall Faulk to under 75 yards.
Not many teams can claim that. This week they held Ricky Watters to only 81 yards.
He usually averages over 100. They also sacked Matt Hasselback 7 times, hit him another
20 times and only allowed the Seahawk QB to pass for grand total of 62 yards.
Even on a bad day, most quarterbacks get at least 125 yards
I remember a game back in 1992 against John Elway and the Denver Broncos, which
the Eagles won 30-0. Elway was sacked 8 times and only had 59 yards passing on the day.
It was his worst performance of his career. The Eagles defense today, is like that defense
then. They come after you. They hit you. You hurt. You either get sacked, throw the ball
away or throw an interception. That was the only postive thing for Hasselback all game.
He did not throw an interception. The Eagles net passing yardage was 242 to the Seahawks 21.
All I can say is, "Watch out NFL, here WE COME!" On a negative note, Duce Staley hurt
his shoulder during the 1st quarter and will likely miss the next two games. Lucky, those
games are against the dregs of the NFC East: Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals.
He should be ready, four weeks from now against those New York Giants on Monday Night
Football. Duce only had 12 yards on 3 carries and 1 catch for 2 more. But rookie RB,
Correll Buckhalter filled in admirable for the injured Staley and finished the day
with 52 yards rushing on 12 carries along with 50 more in the air on 4 catches, including
a big catch to setup Donovan McNabb's 3 yard TD run late in the forth quarter.
This is the first time in a while where Donovan McNabb was not the only big star of the
game. Along with James Thrash, Brandon Whiting had 2 sacks along with 9 tackles;
Bobby Taylor had 4 tackles, a forced fumble, a pass knock down and was the big reason
why the Seahawks only had 21 yards passing net; Carlos Emmons had 5 tackles, assisted
on 6 others and had a sack; Jeremiah Trotter had 12 tackles and 2 sacks; James Thrash
had 10 catches and 165 yards receiving along with 2 touchdowns; Correll Buckhalter gained
102 yards combined on the day; David Akers was 2 for 3 in FGs on the day; Brian
Dawkins had a big day with 8 tackles, 6 assists and 1 sack; Sean Landetta punted 5 times
with a 52.6 average on the day. Oh yeah, Dnovan McNabb had a good game too. He was
24-37 for 283 yards, 0 INT and 2 passing TDs and 1 rushing TD. He only ran 5 times for
16 yards. All in all, the Eagles had a big game on the road to improve to 1-1 and to stay
in first with the Giants who figure to be their only competion now for the East title.
The Redskins, Cowboys and Cardinals all stink and could possible go 0-12 against the Eagles
and Giants. Even last year, nobody figured the Eagles would finish higher than 4th, but they
almost won the division, beat the Tampa Bay Bucaneers in a wild card game and if not for the
Giants may have made it to the Super Bowl. They could do it this year, but must get past the
Giants. They will get their chance in 3 games on October 22 on national television.
