I love the back cover of the Philadelphia Daily News: "BAD COW DISEASE".
That just about sums up the game and probally the season for the once proud
Dallas Cowboys. You can combine the Arizona Cardinals, Washington Redskins
and Cowboys into one team and they probally still stink. It is shame to see
what has happened to the NFC East. Where once, the Eagles, Giants, Cowboys
and Redskins were the pride of the NFL, now they all stink except for the
Giants and Eagles. But watching that Eagles defense perform again, even
against lowly Dallas, they prove that they may be the best defense in the
NFC, if not the NFL. If not for the 300 yards passing against the Rams, which
is misleading and the 200 yards the Cowboys gained in the last 12 minutes
when Andy Reid took out all the starters as if this was preseason, the Eagles
might also be the best defense statistically too. Philadelphia is 2nd versus the
pass and sixth overall. But remember, that is misleading.
The Philadelphia Eagles once again started the game off with a fumble on the
kickoff. First and ten from the Eagles 20 yard line. First play: Emmitt Smith
loses 6. He then gains back 2 and sets up 3rd and 14. Third play: QB Wright pass
is knocked down by Mike Caldwell. He was lucky he wasn't knocked to Mars or intercepted
on the play. Field goal good. After a punt by the Eagles, Dallas starts at their own 41.
First play: incomplete pass as Wright is knocked down again. Next play, Emmitt loses
2 more yards and on third and long, Wright completes a hurried pass for a measely 1 yard.
On the ensuing punt, Mitchell fumbles again, this time setting up first and ten on the 20 yard
line. After two short gains and third and short, Wright is sacked by both Dawkins and Whiting before
he could take three steps back. Field goal good for an early 6-0 lead. But more importantly,
on three possessions, Dallas had amassed a total of minus 10 yards. Once again, the Eagles
held their opponent to under 100 yards passing. The 'Boys finished the day with 61 total
yards passing. That is really pathetic, but with the way the Birds have been playing defense,
it is miracle that they even had over 50. The Eagles throw everything at you, including the
whole house as ESPN's Paul MacGuire said. Wright finished the game with 7 for 23 and 33 yards
and 1 interception. His replacement, Clint Stoerner against the Eagles third team defense,
was 4 for 7 with 44 yards and 2 touchdowns.
As good as the Eagles look on defense, the Eagles offense looks just as good where the Birds
rank 9th overall in offense in the NFL. Donovan McNabb ranks 5th overall with a 98.6 quarterback
rating. McNabb completed 14 of 28 for 162 yards and 3 touchdowns. Once again, McNabb did not
throw an interception. Chad Lewis had 4 catches and 43 yards with 2 touchdowns. While Todd
Pinkston had 3 catches for 71 yards and 1 touchdown. In Correll Buckhalter's first start,
he had 99 yards rushing on 20 carries and his first touchdown of his career. The Eagles are
sitting pretty with the way the NFC East has fallen. They should finish the season no lower
than 10-6, but with a real chance to go 12-4 or even 13-3. It seams like their only games left
maybe against the Raiders and Giants twice. They also host both the improved Chargers and Vikings.
But both those games will be later in the season in possible cold weather. They also finish the
season in Tampa Bay, who they whipped pretty bad in the playoffs last season on New Year's Eve.
The Eagles look like a Super Bowl contender and depending how they do against the Giants, could
end up playing the Rams again, but this time in the NFC Championship game. The fun season looks really bright now
for the Eagles. Up next, the pathetic Cardinals.
