Well it finally happened. The Eagles actually beat those New York
Giants and in all unlikely places but the Meadowlands in front of
a very hostile crowd. Once again, it was a dramatic last 2 minute
drive by Donovan McNabb. It all started with a holding penalty on
a Giants punt which Andy Reid made New York rekick. Instead of first
and 10 deep in their own
territory, the resulting punt went out of bounds at the Giants 40
yard line. McNabb scrambled for 7 yards; Correll Buckhalter ran for 4;
McNabb fired to Pinkston for a quick 6; Duce ran for a short 3 yards;
Buckhalter ran for 2 yards and then for no gain. Now there was only
2 minutes left. After the two minute warning break, Donovan took the
ball and rolled right, looked right for Chad Lewis. Lewis was covered.
He also had Buckhalter a few yards in front of him with plenty of room
to operate. But no, he fired deep into the right corner endzone to James
Thrash who made a great sideline catch keeping both feet inbounds.
Eagles now led 10-9 with 1:52 left on the clock.
Not to worry, the Eagles defense which came up huge at times during the
first half to keep it a close game and basically stopped the Giants
dead in their tracks during the second half entered after the ensuing
kickoff. Kerry Collins first hits Tiki Barber for 11 yards over the middle.
Next play, Jeremiah Trotter blitzes Kerry Collins and chases him down from
behind, strips him. The ball trickles towards the sideline where Brandon
Whiting pounces on the ball keeping inbounds and giving it back to the
Philadelphia's offense and Donovan McNabb. Reid decides to play it safe and
run 3 straight running plays and sets up 4th and 3 at the Giants 29 yard line.
No clinching field goal here. The Eagles go for it and when you thought maybe
a nice time for a short play action might work, Donovan ran the naked bootleg
around everybody on the left side for a 21 yard gain down to the 8 yard line.
Game over. Eagles win 10-9. Streak over. Yes, the Eagles are also in first place
with a 3-2 record over the 3-3 Giants.
It does not matter that the Giants dominated the first half and time of
possession. What is important is that the Eagles defense held the Giants
to 4 field goal attempts in the first half and none in the second half.
Yes, the Giants moved the ball on Philadelphia in the first half, but all they
had to show for it was with 3 field goals and only a 9-0 lead. Eagles kicker
David Akers got back
3 back for Philly late in the 3rd quarter and Donovan did the rest at the end.
McNabb finished the day 15 for 26, 1 TD and 1 INT. He was also sacked 6 times.
But it was Kerry Collins who blinked last when he was stripped by Trotter to end the
Eagles losing streak at 9 games. The Eagles pass defense limited Collins to only
142 net passing yards during the game. They held the vaunted Giants rushing
tandom to 96 total running yards too. Tiki finished with 55 yards and Dayne only
had 32. The Eagles trio also had 96 yards rushing, but 40 of those yards were
on the legs of McNabb. On a day when New York held the clock for a 35-24 minute
advantage, it was the Eagles who scored the only touchdown and won the game, 10-9.
