Perhaps Brian Mitchell won the game on the opening kickoff when he
returned the ball for a 94 yard touchdown and and early 7-0 lead for
Philadelphia. The Eagles offense did not accomplish much during the
game. But Donovan McNabb was sharp, completing 19 of 33 passes for
238 yards, 2 TD's and 1 INT. On the Cardinals side, Jake Plummer
did pass for 293 yards, but much of that was in the closing quarter
with the game perhaps out of reach. Plummer also threw a touchdown
and had an interception. The Eagles defense on a whole played very
sound and more times than not allowed the Cards no room to operate.
Hugh Douglas led the way with 7 solo tackles and 2 sacks. They also
held the Cardinals to a pitiful 2.4 yards per carry and Michael Pittman
only had 18 carries for 43 yards.
It all started with Brian Mitchell returning the opening kickoff for
a touchdown. It was his NFL record tying 12th special teams touchdown.
He has eight on punts and now four on kickoffs. He is tied with the
Redskins Eric Metcalf. His last touchdown on special teams was in the
fifth game of last year against the Atlanta Falcons. Though it appeared
the Eagles dominated the Arizona Cardinals 21-7, they were flagged for
11 penalties and 92 penalty yards. If not for all the untimely penalties,
Philadelphia probally would have won 31-7. The Eagles defense held the
Cards to 7 points. But late in the fourth quarter, the game was not sealed
until Arizona drove down to the Eagles 1 yard line and they looked like they
were going to score a touchdown to make it 21-14. It had another Jake Plummer
comeback written all over it. There was 3:06 left in the game and on first
and goal, Plummer handed the ball off to Michael Pittman and he proceeded
to dive over the pile into the endzone. But both Jeremiah Trotter and
Barry Gardner converged on him and Pittman's arm hit Hollis Thomas' helmut
causing him to fumble. Derrick Burgess recovered the fumble in the
endzone, preserving a 21-7 lead.
On offense, it was a breakout game in a way for rookie Freddie Mitchell.
He finished the day with an impressive 4 catches for 62 yards. Every week,
Mitchell gets more responsiblities and more playing time. Part of it is
the inconsistant play of Na Brown who seems to be dropping more than he can
haul in lately. Three of Freddie's catches resulted in first downs. By the end
of this year, Freddie Mitchell could also overtake Todd Pinkston's job and
start. On the Cardinals side, David Boston once again had a big game against
the Eagles with 8 receptions and 138 yards. The other Cards main receiver,
Frank Sanders finished with 6 catches and 87 yards. Neither had a touchdown.
All in all, it was a solid win for the Philadelphia Eagles andit moved them
to 4-3 overall and still in control of first place in the NFC East. The defense
played tremendous upfront and Donovan McNabb played well after last week's
terrible game. Just win these games in our division and you can at least
book one game at home late in January when the Eagles win the division.
