Philadelphia Eagles' Stat Of The Week

Eagles Defense Was Too Much For
The Cowboys As They Scored Twice

This game was a game between men and boys. The boys though put up a gallant fight, really could not compete versus the men in green. Any team with Ryan Leaf at quarterback will have a tough time competing against the better teams. If not for a pretty good Dallas defense, this game may have been worse than the 36-3 score. You have to take into the account that Ryan Leaf did in fact give the Eagles two gift wrapped touchdowns. The first and biggest mistake in the game came with only 7 seconds left in the first half. Leaf was trying to complete a short sideline pass to Darrin Chiaverini. The only problem was linebacker Jeremiah Trotter was waiting for the pass and stepped in front of the receiver and for the second time in two years, returned an interception in Dallas for a touchdown.

What in the world was the Cowboys coach Dave Campo thinking in that play call just before halftime. Why didn't he just call for the kneel down. The Cowboys should of been thankful for just 13-0 deficit. Or they should of least went deep downfield for the old Hail Mary pass. But it was Jeremiah Trotter who grew up only 2 hours away in nearby Hook, Texas who made the game clinching play. Two years, two games in Dallas and now 2 touchdowns for Trotter and a 20-0 lead going into halftime. The other interception returned for a touchdown happened late in the fourth quarter, when William Hampton scored from 38 yards out to put the finishing touches on an 36-3 win. Other than Emmitt Smith's 80 yards rushing on 15 carries, Dallas did not have much to show for themselves other than a meaningless field goal in the forth quarter so the Cowboys would not be shutout at home.

Donovan McNabb was not sharp again as he only completed 16 passes on 32 attempts for 129 yards with a touchdown and interception. McNabb was not pressured much and Dallas did not have a sack. But it was Duce Staley with another 100 yard rushing game which help clinch the game in the second half. The Eagles ball control in the second half used up over 20 minutes on the clock. Staley finished the day with 26 carries and 102 yards. He also had 4 receptions for 31 yards. But the only touchdown for the Eagles offense came in the second quarter on a 2 yard pass to Chad Lewis. The drive was set up after Bobby Taylor tackled and stripped Emmitt Smith of the ball. Most of the offense came on the foot of David Akers as he was perfect with 5 field goals of: 24, 46, 26, 28 and 30 yards each. After Emmitt's fumble, the Cowboys never forced the issue on offense again as the Eagles stingy defense relentlessly pressured Ryan Leaf and stopped the Cowboys only real weapon in their running game. The Eagles also had 3 sacks, but if not for the stupid play of Ryan Leaf, would have had more like 6 sacks. The long afternoon concluded and the Eagles remained in first place with a 6-3 record. The Washington Redskins will come to town on a 4 game winning streak next week.
