Brian Dawkins had a monster of a game. He first returned a fumble
into a 49 yard touchdown return. He also had 8 solo tackles, a forced
fumble on Doug Flutie and a couple of pass breakups on the day.
Philadelphia Eagles' Stat Of The Week
With 10 punts on the day, Sean Landetta passed Lee Johnson for most NFL
career punts. He's now got 1,192 and counting. Landetta was then named
NFC Special Team Player of the Week. It was his second this year and
fifth career nomination. The Eagles other kicker, David Akers kicked
another field goal late and is now 21 for 23 on the year with a sucess
rate of 91.3%, best in the NFL.

Eagles Get It Down With Defense,
Get Chance To Clich East Next Week
Philadelphia played just good enough to come away with an easy
win over the once pretty good San Diego Chargers. Even though Doug
Flutie had a pretty good game, it was the Eagles defense that won
the game forcing Charger mistakes all game long. Flutie threw 44
times for 20 completions and 307 yards. He also rushed 8 times for
45 yards. But more importantly, he was intercepted twice and fumbled.
The fumble was a critical play as he was scrambling from the relentless
Eagles pass rush. At the last second, Brian Dawkins came up with the
big tackle and strip of the football. It was Hollis Thomas who pounced
on the ball. Seven plays later, David Akers kicked his first field
goal of the day, a 37-yard game clincher that gave the the Philadelphia
Eagles an almost insurmountable 24-14 lead.
Brian Dawkins was the star of the defense. He recovered another fumble
by LaDainian Tomlinson and ran it back 49 yards for a touchdown and 14-7
lead. He made numerous hits on San Diego receivers and forced their drops.
He should of had his first INT of the year, but Troy Vincent made a spectacular
diving grab of the ball right in front of his waiting arms. Though Doug
flutie was only sacked twice, he could of been sacked ten times if not for
his quick feet and hurried throws. The Eagle special teams did a terrific
job too, often pinning the Chargers deep in their own territory with Brian
Mitchell on the other hand given the Birds pretty good field position.
Mitchell's combined 112 yards put him only 22 yards short of the magical
20,000 yard club. Only other members are Jerry Rice and Walter Payton.
The Eagles offense led by Donovan McNabb had a pretty good day overall.
Give credit to the Chargers defense who kept themeselves close to the
Birds most of the day. McNabb completed 22 of 44 passes for 221 yards
with 2 touchdowns and 1 pick. Duce Staley led the team with 5 catches,
88 receiving yards and one touchdown. The touchdown happened with 1:57
left in the first half. Though the Eagles only scored 3 second half points,
the defense held San Diego scoreless in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Jeff
Graham made an absolute circus catch soon after the Eagles took an early 7-0
lead. It appeared that Brian Dawkins went for the pass and came up short.
It was however, Troy Vincent who had coverage on him, but failed to look
back for the ball. Graham reached around Vincent and plucked the ball
from around him and then proceded to the endzone for a touchdown. The play
went for 61 yards. Graham scored the other touchdown too, with 1:01 left in
the half. Overall, the Eagles played well on both sides of the ball,
especially on defense led by Brian Dawkins who led the team with 8 tackles
along with Jeremiah Trotter who also had 8 tackles. The difference was the
4 forced turnovers by the Eagles defense. Next week, the Eagles will have
a chance to clinch the division with a win versus the Redskins and a Giants
loss.
